The last dance - Please don't let me be misunderstood

The final chapter
In the spring of 2013, an amazing woman showed me a big piece of what I’ve been missing for years.
We stopped bumping into each other. Her response to any conversation was “We’ll be talking.” And she’d walk away. This very special person did me a huge service. She showed me sincere kindness. She also had the courage to show me her fear / terror. |

February 27 - Happy Anniversary and our last dance
I headed out for music about 6:00 p.m. hoping to see Mystery Woman somewhere tonight. Thank you God. She was at one of the clubs I stopped at.
I was going to stay in the background. Until … the band started playing a special song. Like a year ago – I took a deep breath – and went up and asked her to dance.
The song was made for an icebreaking dance. The Animals. “Please don’t let me be misunderstood”. I couldn’t pass that one up.
She hesitated a little when I asked her to dance. I don’t know if she was surprised – or if the song bothered her – doesn’t matter. It was almost as if the universe had the band play that song. I prayed she would hear the message and feel the friendship.
We DANCED! We made eye contact. She sang along like she was singing to me. At least that’s what I imagined. I smiled and shook my finger – like – don’t go there. She laughed and made a comment about how we both remember the words. We chatted for a couple of minutes after the song ended. She said she wasn’t going to stay late. I said I wasn’t either.
She told me about an early morning doctor’s appointment and an MRI.
My immediate reaction:
Are you ok? I touched her lightly on her left arm.
She is. Just routine.
It looked like you had a blast in Memphis. I enjoyed hanging with the group – virtually. Do you remember any of the stories?
“Yep – most of them. I wasn’t drinking much down there.”
Really? Even the night of the party with the ducks?
She smiled, we shared a hug, and I left.
